In 1994, the Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (ITTM) was born in Taiping, Perak by Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), the largest telecommunications company in Malaysia. The first campus is Telekom Malaysia Berhad northern region of the former office. The first group of 42 students were selected to undergo an experimental 2 years diploma telecommunications engineer. The excellent academic success of the 1 st and 2 nd batch ITTM has rewarded with the first private university in Malaysia. With the status of the university in 1996, ITTM changed its name to the University of Telekom. Two centres were established, one in its original location in Taiping, Perak and one in Selangor.

Melaka The campus was established in 1997 and located in the district Ayer Keroh, the initial creation of the campuses involved converting an old building belonging to Telekom Malaysia Berhad office in the southern region.

Cyberjaya Malaysia opened its campus in the first intelligent city of Cyberjaya, July 8, 1999. This campus is an original idea of the country the fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as a centre of learning and research for the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), an area of 750 km ² designated as a country of high technology and research industrial zone. The relationship between the campus and the MSC is designed to be similar to the relationship of Stanford University shares with Silicon Valley. Later, he called on the administration to rename the University Telekom Multimedia University.

Within the first five years of its founding, the university's total student population grew beyond 10000 at the two campuses.

The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.
